Remember when they would tell us to look at the cracks in the sidewalk, see the plants growing, see it as life thriving in the midst of a struggle or in a forbidding environment? And we were supposed to feel hopeful. And now that we are grown, we see that where there is life that struggles to survive like this, we fill it with poison; this triumph of life making it through the cracks (and making the cracks) in the systems that hold it down, it is seen as an affront to the status quo, something to be stamped out. We don’t want life to be triumphant. Life is messy, life is unknown, life involves the realization that we don’t know that much about it. We don’t want life. We want order.
